Who can cook??

So, everyone says women should know how to cook... It's assumed that you know your pink dal from your green one, and your garam masala from, I don't know, maybe hing! And, you're supposed to know all this much much before you go to live alone in another country, especially because you're vegeterian by choice in a country where fish is considered veg food!

And ofcourse, I didn't know any of this. The closest I ever ventured into the kitchen was to make tea (and it was really good, if I may add!) for my Mom sometimes, when I was in 8th grade. Some time later, my Gran'dad decided to take matters in his own hand (because I could very easily refuse Mom when she asked me to come and make something with her and the cook) and he tried to teach me to make rotis. I made the chapati in the shape of Orissa. He gave up.

Years later, when I had started working in Delhi, the bai didn't turn up and my Mom was away, so I had to make meals through the whole weekend.. I remember I tried to make Kadi Chawal but I got the proportions all wrong for both the kadi and the chawal... so what we had was like solid kadi and watery chawal... However, I was forgiven... sigh, such an understanding family I have (except for my brother who laughed at me, nodded his head and said "Didi, who is going to marry you at this rate?!".. thankfully, he was kidding)..

But the panic button was pressed when I was about to leave for Paris. They gave me one week's notice to make arrangements, and this was obviously not enough time for me to learn to properly identify and cook pink, green, half green (damn, I still dont know the names!) dal, rice, chapati, AND sabzi! It was like information overload! So, my Mom very sweetly made a recipe book for me, which painstakingly explained how to make simple everyday food. And she knew me well enough to actually label the masala packets too, because she knew I wouldn't know the difference between chaat masala and amchur (are they the same thing?? they're not, right?!).. yes, I love my Mom and yes I also know she's pampered me!

Anyways, just because I had a recipe book and labelled food items in hand didn't mean I could start cooking right away! I had to identify the actual food in the grocery store too... and there lay the challenge - one, because I didn't recognize some of the more interesting vegetables, like louki, or ghiya (and thankfully, I didn't eat these either), and second, because the names were in French... anyways, help was sought from colleagues, not without being a laughing stock first... that done, the first day I made something, I burnt it. So I actually called my boss, who was staying at the same hotel and asked him the words I think he'll never forget "Boss, how to cook dal?!"... I think he had a fit - laughing.... he said "Maine socha team mein ladki aayegi aur humare liye khana pakayegi, lekin yahan to ulti ganga beh rahee hai!" - like I don't have anything better to do in life than cook for an entire team of hungry men (even if I knew how to)! So my boss, who is a very good cook, taught me how to make dal, curry, samosas, paranthas, pooris, chhole, rajma, kadi, round chapatis, and bhindi ki sabzi, among many others!! The poori story is funny because I didn't know how to make pooris, but decided to be nice and offer to help my (same) boss's wife in the kitchen... when I started to put dry aata on the poori to flatten it out, she sighed, looked at me squarely, and told me to go watch the movie with the guys and get out of her way in the kitchen!

From someone who knew zilch about cooking anything 3 years back, I've come a long long way - Wednesdays are usually "my day to cook" here at my aunt's place... and this Wednesday, I made shahi paneer, pulao and methi aloo ki sabzi for dinner, ALL by myself! (Ok, so I had a little help from bawarchi.com - so?!) And I knew it was really good because my cousin, who is very very finicky about the taste of food (especially when it comes to paneer) had four helpings of the shahi paneer!!

Well ..u know what I mean ..right?

Now tell me , you sure you made methi aloo and not palak aloo or dhaniya patta aloo aur pudina aloo ?? Did anybody validate you ?

:) thats such a funny yet straight from the heart post.

Reminded me of the time when I made my first cup of tea taking help from a maths book. :P

I guess instead of hogging your space I should rather write a post about it on my blog :)

Wow super impressed that you can cook all that. If and when I come to the US...pl cook me a meal. :)
You know over the last 3 years I have been cooking quite a bit...but even now there are days or weeks when oops everything goes wrong...have you ever experienced this?

are u saying that u knew how to make samosas and never made any for us in the 10 months when u were here??? this behaviour is just not acceptable!

After some years of practice, I've concluded I'm not such a bad cook after all. And this year, I'm going to learn how to make the fancier traditional stuff - like achar and gujia and mathri! Why? Because my biggest fear is that my (unborn) children will never get to eat homemade stuff and I'll have to buy them from the market. Not fair, I'd say!

Wow.. sounds like it is all happy ending eh. You sure have come a long way but then everyone is like that because living by yourself in a foreign country is no fun. I knew how difficult it was for me. I still don't know much but I pulled along with whatever little I knew along you know.

Was quite funny and brave. Why? For all you put it up on internet and there would be an agony aunt somewhere to help you now. So yea you are a brave gurl. LOL

Hee hee. All moms are the same. Mine didn't believed I can cook food without killing somebody or burning the house down before my brother and friends called her up and gave me certificates of merit. Unfortunately, I didn't have a chance to cook up something for her yet. Maybe sometime soon .. when I see her next.
Btw, I have observed that the other sex has a fairly good sense of proportion and innovation when it comes to cooking. At least my father tries out new recipes and compares notes with me. My mother is less adventurous in this matter though :D

Ha! Are you sure you didnt start off making Paneer Makhani and ended up making Shahi Paneer? :P

gujjob!!!! nicely done!

I always loved to cook but I (and I'm not saying this with the least bit of pride) had a grand mom who felt very strongly against girls from our family working in the kitchen! So it gave me a lot happiness a child to sneak in to the kitchen n make pooris n parathas (sticky four, dusty flour n the thrill of danger with hot oil .. oooh!) I guess reverse psych always works ;)

After leaving home I actually taught sm of my roomies to cook :) And they still call me mummyji :P
lol!

I learned cooking coz i was forced too..in the beginning it was a chore..It has been 8 years since i started cooking..mainly coz my parents worked away from home and myself and bro had the freedom to do experiments in the kitchen..;-P

My sister was trying to teach me once I came back from Canada, before I leant anytg I started to Sydney. So she wrote all recipies in abooklet... I forgot to carry it. So same story continues.

Ha ha! Lovely. Why cook when you can order food? But, for me, I stumbled onto cooking in my lazy year in the Amrika! And oh, loved it. It is really therapeutic, except when hubby dear decides to help :) Try out exotic recipes.. there is one Kashmiri dish on Bawarchi I think with green apples. It is YUM. Try it!

lol! yes, sure.. cook something and you can taste it through blogger.com too! that way i wont have to worry about the real taste of the food!

`aparna
i know!! my dad is quite adventurous in the kitchen too! his favs are prawns, fish and soups! and he can never really repeat the recipe because he makes it pretty much on the spur of the moment! u know, they say that women are less experimental than men when it comes to cooking, thats why the best chefs in the world are men!!

`keshi
u know, slowly and gradually i am beginning to like cooking too... trying out some new recipes :)

`apoo
lol! u can eat it virtually and find out for yourself!

`nutty
lol! mom?! hahaha... somehow cant imagine u in that "role" but ok! cooking for one person is not so nice though, thats why when i'm alone, i usually make do with a sandwich or something.. it's nice to cook for 6 people nowadays! not so good for them though!

`adarsh
lol! no burger for me! last time i had a burger was probably 7 or 8 years back!! in times of need, i rely on subway!

`mathew
totally agreed! atleast for me, i didnt have a reason to learn how to cook till i stayed alone in an alien country where there was no bai to help!! nice to see u're enjoying cooking now.. most guys i know who live alone end up loving to cook!

`indrajit
lol! why not try it in reality once! u'll be surprised!

`satyajit
hello! long time no see :) i've noticed that for men, those who love eating generally love cooking.. so if u dont live to eat, then u wont really have a reason to learn cooking!

`arbit
what are u saying?! u're always cooking something nice at home whenever we're talking! and no, i havent reached the stage of "sharing recipes" yet!

`ram
lol! join the bandwagon of virtual eaters :)

`nisha
yes yes! did i not mention i'm looking for a guy who can cook?! hehehe

`arthur
improves quality? when has outsourcing ever done that?! (and i'm in IT, trust me, i know!)

`cm chap
lol! all ur sister's hard work wasted! too bad! well as long as u know what the end result of the dal will be, u're ok.. dont have to know the name!! :)

`cuckoo
kashmiri dish which is veggie? this i'd like to see! and yeah, am not sure actually if its a good thing if husband knows how to cook.. then he can point out all your faults.. and maybe take over the kitchen just so he doesnt have to eat your (mine) food... wait, thats a good thing!! :))

`

I really don't want to snatch jobs of all these food industry people. I prefer eating out, its a great social work. Besides, why should i cook and waste my million dollar times on cooking.
I was kidding, the fact is cooking is difficult and I have all the time to learn it, but i am too lazy. but anyway nice post and quite a good observation.

Niiyara said...

hehe. I can't cook at all. And unlike you, my tea is RUBBISH! (So I've been told, that is). I'm a failure of a girl and a daughter ;)

haha that's really funny. i've always worried about how i'll survive as a vegetarian abroad being the worst cook ever. except maggi ofcourse. Every time I have gone abroad I've been living on pampered holiday budgets that allow for me to search out and pay for available veg food and it has also meant periods of starving sometimes like in China where they eat anything that walks or breathes including catterpillar fungus!so yeah if i actually have to live somewhere bawarchi.com it is which i even rely on here in desperate situations
